FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(MARBLE FALLS, Texas) October 07, 2024 — In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month this October, Pedernales Electric Cooperative will host a community shred day October 16 from noon to 2 p.m. The event is free, open to the public, and will be held at PEC’s Marble Falls office — located at 4302 N. U.S. 281.

Those who attend can bring up to five boxes of paper for shredding. This includes, white or colored paper, stapled or Scotch-taped pages, and paper envelopes with plastic windows. Items not accepted include paper with packing tape, cardboard, binders, hanging files, newspapers, magazines, plastics, Styrofoam, electronics, or batteries.

PEC cybersecurity experts warn never to toss important information into unsecured trash or recycling bins. This includes:

  • Personal information (birthdate, Social Security number, etc.)
  • Account information (account numbers, PINs)
  • Payment and financial information (including tax forms)
  • Child- and school-related documentation
  • Usernames and passwords
  • Junk mail (barcodes can sometimes contain identifying information).

Experts also recommend using complex and unique passwords, including for PEC’s SmartHub. PEC also encourages members to stay safe by:

  • Confirming the identity of those claiming to be employees of PEC by asking to see their badge or by calling us at 888-554-4732.
  • Keeping their computer and phone software up to date.
  • Using two-factor authentication whenever possible for extra account security.
  • Logging into important accounts with saved or bookmarked links and keeping an eye out for suspicious links in emails and text messages.
  • Using PEC’s secure payment options to help protect their information.
