PEC is more than an ordinary utility — we’re a nonprofit, member-owned cooperative, which means that you’re more than a customer. As a PEC member, you are an owner of an organization serving more meters than any other U.S. electric cooperative. And, as such, we never lose sight of what’s truly important — providing each member with personalized, first-class service.
Members have unique privileges and rights
Member-owned, member-governed
Decisions about our rates, bylaws, services, and more are approved by our PEC Board of Directors, a member-elected team of seven who are also members, just like you. Learn more about our elections and board meetings.
Capital credits
As a nonprofit cooperative, we don’t pay dividends to shareholders. Instead, any margins are reinvested in our operations and eventually returned to members in the form of capital credits.

The seven cooperative principles that guide us
Cooperatives are independent, private, and nonprofit organizations owned by the members they serve, rooted in the cooperative principles first established by the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in 1844. As one of more than 900 members of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, PEC is guided by these seven principles.
Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership.
Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.
Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their cooperative.
Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members.
Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperatives.
Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together.
While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities.
Proudly serving our members for more than 85 years
Electricity comes to the Texas Hill Country
In 1938, Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson brings five Texas counties together to incorporate the “Pedernales Electric Cooperative,” and secures a loan to build nearly 1,800 miles of electric lines.
Leading the way in rural street lights
In 1959, PEC installs street lights in Lago Vista, which becomes the first rural community in the nation with illuminated streets.
Growing to meet the needs of the Hill Country
In 1986, Hill Country growth is skyrocketing — just five years after hitting the 50,000-meter milestone, PEC installs its 75,000th meter.
Power the lives of nearly a million
In 2017, PEC reaches 300,000 active accounts that serve almost 1 million people.
Meeting an 85-year milestone
2023 marks our 85th year of serving the Texas Hill Country and our members with integrity, safety, service, and accountability.
