PEC Now Accepting Youth Tour Applications

High School Students Encouraged to Apply for Free Trip to Washington, D.C.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(JOHNSON CITY, Texas) October 7, 2024 — Participating in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Tour program is a decades-long tradition for Pedernales Electric Cooperative. Since 1966, the cooperative has selected students to attend the trip of a lifetime in Washington, D.C. This year, PEC will select a group of high school students to represent the cooperative and join thousands of students from electric cooperatives across the U.S. Those selected as PEC’s Youth Tour delegates will visit historical sites, meet elected officials, and create lifelong friendships.

“Year after year, we get to hear stories from past participants about how the trip inspired them, the memories these students made, and in some cases — how it was life-changing,” said Mikayla Herron PEC Community Outreach Specialist. “It’s a joy to provide this opportunity to our area youth and if we can play a small part in positively shaping America’s future we’re proud to support them!”

PEC delegate Jake McAnelly attended Youth Tour in 2024. He encourages students to apply and says they have nothing to lose — and only opportunities and experiences to gain. McAnelly said, “This experience solidified my eagerness to participate in a future career in government. It truly was an opportunity of a lifetime.”

The deadline to apply is November 12, 2024. PEC delegates selected for Youth Tour will attend the trip June 15-22, 2025. While on the trip they will have the opportunity to:

• Tour historical sites, including Arlington National Cemetery, Capitol Hill, the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Washington National Cathedral, and more.
• Meet local political representatives and learn more about local and national government.
• Create lifelong friendships with students from all around the country.

To be considered, students must:

• Have completed their high school sophomore, junior, or senior year by June 2025.
• Have a parent or legal guardian who is a PEC member in good standing.
• Be available to attend the trip June 15-22.
• Submit an online application, answer one short-answer question, provide a copy of their current resume, and have an adult reference completed by Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

Students are invited to learn more and apply here.
