Don’t Heat up Your Bill While Cooling Your Home

Track usage trends online and manage your AC use!

When it’s hot, reaching for the thermostat feels like the only solution. But running your AC at colder temperatures in the summer can have quite the impact on what you pay each month. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, cooling and heating your home makes up more than 50% of your bill.

To keep your costs manageable in the hotter months, set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher during the hottest parts of the day. To keep it cooler while staying efficient, lower your thermostat by 2 degrees at a time instead of setting it directly at the desired temperature.

Your fans can help you stay cool as well, but be sure they are rotating counterclockwise so it creates a downdraft. And remember that while fans can help you feel up to 4 degrees cooler, it’s suggested that you turn them off when you leave the room. Fans cool people, not spaces.

Track your bill each month

You can keep track of what you’re spending each month from the palm of your hand. Log in to your account at pec.smarthub.coop from your computer, smartphone, or tablet, and monitor your energy use through our Usage Explorer. This tool gives you a detailed look at your past and current usage, all in one place. View your daily usage and weather trends or, if available, see hourly or 15-minute interval readings. Be sure to look at the kilowatt-hours (kWh), as that is the measurement of how much energy you have used.

SmartHub also allows you to:

  • Analyze and understand usage trends to find ways to cut back.
  • Track how much power your home is using when everyone has left for the day.
  • Compare your summer and winter usage alongside historical temperature information.
  • Receive a message when you have an upcoming bill or when you’ve used a certain amount of energy. Our system lets you choose how and when you hear from us!

Choose how you pay

While in your account, you can also choose how you pay your bill. If you sign up for automatic bank draft or enroll in paperless billing, you can save up to $2.50 monthly. To enroll in auto pay, follow the instructions below:

  • Sign in to your account at pec.coop/autopay.
  • You can add or cancel auto pay from the ‘Auto Pay Program’ screen under ‘Bill & Pay.’
