When you know what to expect from PEC, you’ll know a scam when you see one.
If you’ve read our recent summer energy conservation stories, you’ve probably heard many of the primary cost-saving tips. But how well do you really know what’s consuming your energy? Keeping these facts in mind can help you save more money this summer.
Cooling and heating your home makes up more than 50% of your bill
This is the biggest user of electricity. Be sure to set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher in the summer, and make sure to replace your HVAC air filters when dirty or damaged.
Your water heater makes up 20% of your bill
Like the HVAC, your electric water heater makes up a big chunk of your energy use. To keep this tank from running up your bill, set its temperature to 120 degrees, and install a timer that shuts off the unit during times you don’t need hot water.
A poorly insulated home can cost you up to $500 more on your electric bill
Use caulk and weatherstripping on gaps in your home and schedule an over-the-phone energy assessment with one of our advisors to save more. You can do so by going to your online account at pec.smarthub.coop or by calling us at 888-554-4732.
Devices like gaming consoles, printers, and computers draw power even when in standby mode
Hitting the power button on your device may not be enough to stop it from using electricity. Be sure to plug these into power strips that can be turned off during times of inactivity.
Old lightbulbs can use up to 50 more watts than LED bulbs
It might not seem like much, but everything adds up when you’re already trying to fight the extreme heat. Check your bulbs to see if they are incandescent and replace them with LEDs for energy savings.
