When you know what to expect from PEC, you’ll know a scam when you see one.
Scams come in many forms, from door-to-door salespeople who may claim to be partnering with PEC to phone calls or texts that ask you to pay with a prepaid card. New tactics pop up regularly, but if you know what PEC will and won’t do, there’s no scam you can’t avoid.
Identifying workers
If you see someone you don’t recognize on your property, ask them for identification. All PEC employees carry a company ID. Our contractors carry letters of authorization from PEC and will gladly supply them upon request. If someone visits your property and won’t show ID or you are contacted by someone claiming to be a PEC employee, call us to verify their identity at 888-554-4732.
PEC will never
- Ask you to pay with a prepaid card or payment app such as Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle. PEC’s official app is SmartHub, which you can use to access your balance.
- Call from an out-of-state number.
- Instruct you not to call any other PEC number to make a payment.
- Have a technician call you to say they are coming to disconnect your power.
- Request a cash payment at your home or business.
- Try to sell you products or services by phone or door-to-door, including solar panels, energy audits, and “important energy-saving initiatives.” PEC does not endorse any solar company or installer.
PEC will
- Make recorded courtesy calls and direct you to our secure payment line at 844-886-9798.
- Use a credit bureau, Collection Services, for delinquent balances on closed accounts. You can reach Collection Services to verify calls at 800-286-2487.
- Send field agents to collect payments — never in cash — at residential and commercial locations.
