While you might see the power lines overhead, lines and other utility equipment can also be anywhere underground. Before you dig, call 811 first — it’s the law and could save your life.
Don’t plant trees or shrubs directly under power lines
Trees are not only a great way to beautify your yard, they can also help save on energy costs by shading your home. But if you aren’t careful where you plant them, you could make yourself susceptible to broken power lines and interrupted electric service.

Be mindful of pad-mounted transformers
Those big metal boxes in the neighborhood may be an eyesore at times, but hiding them with shrubs or other plants can cause hazards for PEC lineworkers. When these boxes are obstructed by plants, it makes it more dangerous and difficult for PEC lineworkers to restore power.
Consider your HVAC when planting
Planting a tree to shade your HVAC can help it run more efficiently, but be sure to keep debris and dead leaves clear of the unit, as it could create a fire hazard.
