Try These Tricks for Energy-Saving Treats

Energy vampires lurk in the shadows of your home, and if you’re not careful, they could haunt your appliances and suck your electricity. For a treat on your energy bills this fall, try these energy-saving tricks from PEC.

Trick: Use power strips

Treat: When you hit the power button to turn off your gaming console or television, you might not realize that you’re only putting it in “standby mode.” If an energy vampire sees you do this, it will begin stealing your power. To ward them off, add power strips to these items, which you can switch off to cut the flow of electricity entirely.

Trick: Seal air leaks

Treat: Keep the ghosts and ghouls from coming in and haunting your home. Check the weatherstripping on your windows and doors, and seal leaks with caulk or replacement stripping.

Trick: Use timers

Treat: Stop the goblins feeding off your energy in their tracks by installing timers for electronics. Timers can be helpful for devices that only need to be used for a short time or at a specific time of day, such as a coffee maker or robot vacuum.

Trick: Upgrade appliances

Treat: Outdated appliances are less efficient than some of the newer models and can be more susceptible to energy vampires. When shopping for a new refrigerator or washing machine, look for the ENERGY STAR® logo to maximize your savings.

Extra tip: Do a walk through your home to find electronics and appliances that could fall prey to energy vampires. Then follow these tips and stop these monsters from haunting your bill.

Getting rid of energy vampires can help you save as much as 10% on your monthly energy bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
