PEC Enhances Free Online Literary Expedition Library
Pedernales Electric Cooperative is proud to celebrate National Read Across America Day and is committed to supporting education and opportunity for Central Texas youth. In honor of National Read Across America Day, March 2, PEC is sharing new content on its Literary Expedition Library for students, parents, and teachers. The free online website includes a collection of video readings and resources geared toward students in pre-K through fifth grade. PEC first launched the tool last year and added new content this year to share with members, area schools, libraries, and after-school programs.
“We hope these videos will help cultivate a love for reading among young students and inspire them to pick up a book — just for fun,” said Kevyn Packer, PEC community outreach specialist. “Whether at home or in the classroom, our materials are accessible anytime, so we encourage exploring these thoughtful new additions to our digital library.”
PEC reached out to several members this year to participate in the taped readings for the Literary Expedition Library. The new books and community readers include:
- “Bryson the Brave Bison”, written by Nate Davenport and Luke Freshwater. Read by Dakota Meyer, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Medal of Honor recipient and firefighter.
- “¿De dónde eres?: Where Are You From?”, written by Yamile Saied Méndez and illustrated by Jaime Kim. Read by Angel Tavera, custom home builder.
- “I Really Want to Win”, written by Simon Philip and illustrated by Lucia Gaggiotti. Ready by Ali Ross, physician’s assistant.
- “If You Give a Moose a Muffin”, written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond. Read by Emma Faye Rudkin and her dog, Hank. Emma is a motivational speaker and an advocate for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
- “Rosie’s Wild Ride: Chasing Big Rodeo Dreams”, written by Paige Murray and illustrated by Kristen Humphrey and Jim Madsen. Read by Sierra Emerson, entrepreneur and hairstylist.
Throughout the year, PEC also offers the following free learning tools:
- Camp Save-a-Watt™ — PEC’s free, online summer camp for students in pre-K through fifth grade.
- Circuit builder — Lessons on the components of electric circuits for third through sixth grades.
- Meet a lineworker — PEC lineworkers visit schools, libraries, and attend community events to share information about their career. Students can meet a lineworker, try on safety gear, and see a bucket truck in action.
- Activity books — Electrical safety educational materials for students in first through fifth grades.
- Coloring sheets — Provides students in pre-K through second grade an opportunity to learn about electricity while coloring.
Members can visit PEC’s Literary Expedition Library and follow the cooperative’s social media channels to learn more.
