Shut the Door on Scams!

Staying Informed of PEC’s Practices Can Help Keep You Safe

Shut the Door on Scams

Some PEC members have been receiving calls from impostors claiming they will turn off their electric service if payment isn’t received. They’ve also received text messages from impostors requesting payment via a QR code. Both of these are scams! It’s important to understand PEC’s practices for how we will contact you.

PEC WILL NEVER:

  • Request payment with a prepaid card or payment app such as Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle. PEC’s official app is SmartHub, which you can use to access your account.
  • Call from an out-of-state number.
  • Instruct you not to call a PEC number to make a payment.
  • Request cash payment at your home or business.
  • Try selling products or services by phone or door-to-door, including solar panels, energy audits, or “important energy-saving initiatives.”
  • Partner with third-party home service companies.
  • Request payment via text with a QR code.

PEC WILL:

  • Make recorded courtesy calls and direct you to our secure payment line at 855-938-3589.
  • Use Online Utility Exchange, a credit bureau, for delinquent balances on closed accounts. You can reach them to verify calls at 800-286-2487.
  • Send field agents to collect payments — never in cash — at residential and commercial locations.

IDENTIFY PEC EMPLOYEES

All PEC employees carry a company ID, and our contractors carry letters of authorization. If they refuse to show ID, please verify by calling PEC directly at 888-554-4732.
