With the holiday season in full swing, you’re probably getting out the lights and preparing to deck the halls. While it’s an exciting time, don’t forget to hang lights carefully. It can be a dangerous task.

Before you start stringing lights, remember these important safety tips:

Check for frayed wires
If cords or wires are worn out, replace them. And while you’re checking, it’s also a good idea to check your extension cords and replace any broken bulbs.

Avoid overloading circuits
Do not plug multiple cords into a single circuit, as this can overheat the circuit and pose a danger to your home.

Don’t staple lights to your roof
Stapling down light strings to your house could damage your roof and lead to leaks. Instead, pick up some plastic clips at your local hardware store.

Use GFCIs for outdoor lights
Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) automatically shut off power quickly when a short circuit occurs, preventing potential electric shocks.

Use a ladder
Don’t stand on a chair or table. Reduce your risk of falling and electric shock by opting for a fiberglass ladder. Fiberglass is nonconductive, so you can stay safe if you come across a frayed wire or broken light. While you’re up there, don’t overreach for a spot where you could lose your balance. Be safe and reposition the ladder.

We want your holidays to be merry and bright, which is why it’s important to prioritize safety when decorating your home. For more safety tips, visit myPEC.com/safety.
