PEC and City of Johnson City Hosts Inaugural Arbor Day Celebration

Rooted in Service, Cooperative Committed to Community and Environment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(JOHNSON CITY, Texas) October 1, 2024— Pedernales Electric Cooperative strives to provide its members with safe, reliable, low-cost electric service while enhancing and caring for the community and environment. As part of this commitment, PEC and the City of Johnson City co-hosted an Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, September 28, from 8-10 a.m. at Memorial Park.

A tree was dedicated to honor community members, David and Susan Hamm, who have contributed their time to the beautification of the city’s landscaping over the years. Following the ceremony, PEC provided free plants to those who attended and enjoyed various interactive booths from PEC arborists, Urban Tree, The Johnson City Public Library, and the Texas A&M Forestry Service.

“An act as simple as planting one tree can cultivate a legacy of environmental stewardship and love for our community,” said Penny Whisenant, Vegetation Maintenance Supervisor. “We are delighted to partner with the city for this special event to celebrate the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country and influence future generations to continue its preservation for years to come,” Whisenant said.

While National Arbor Day falls in April and Texas Arbor Day is held in November, PEC and the City of Johnson City held their celebration at the end of September to coincide with optimal tree planting season in Central Texas, which runs from late September through early October.
