More Than 100 Campers and Their Families Attended the Event in Marble Falls

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(MARBLE FALLS, Texas) July 1, 2024 — Pedernales Electric Cooperative held its third annual Camp Save-a-Watt™ Solar Car Derby Day at Putters & Gutters on Friday, June 28, in Marble Falls. More than 100 campers and their families attended the free event and participated in more than 52 races. Campers enjoyed building and racing their solar cars, making arts and crafts, eating pizza and snacks, and meeting PEC’s Camp Save-a-Watt mascot, Wattson Raccoon. The event also featured face painting, slot car racing, music, and games.

Christian Slawek Robertson was the first-place overall PEC Solar Car Derby champion, followed by Maia Boroff who came in second place, and Luke Roberts who took third place.

“We’re thrilled at the turnout and response to our camp this year,” said Kevyn Packer, PEC Community Outreach Specialist. “It’s wonderful to have an event that brings families together and we’re proud to provide an enriching and interactive experience for kids to learn about solar energy and conservation.”

This year’s derby was the largest turnout to in the three years that PEC has hosted the event. Camp Save-a-Watt is PEC’s free, virtual summer camp for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Through hands-on weekly lessons, the camp teaches students about energy conservation, nature, and electrical safety. The program also focuses on the importance of saving energy in everyday life, both at home and at school.

In addition to PEC’s Solar Car Derby Day, campers also have the opportunity to attend a few in-person events at local libraries across the co-op’s service area this summer where PEC will host “Meet a Lineworker” events for Camp Save-a-Watt campers. With the help of parents and teachers, PEC hopes that Camp Save-a-Watt can teach its youngest members important tips to reduce their energy use and help save their schools and parents money.
