Spring Cleaning for a More Efficient Home

Get Your Home Ready to Handle a Hot Summer

The weather is comfortable, the flowers are blooming, and spring is here, which means it’s time for a little spring cleaning! While this time of year isn’t usually when we see high bills, there are a few things you can do now to prepare yourself for the hot Texas summer.

Get your air conditioning unit serviced

Before we get into summer, it’s a good idea to have your A/C unit serviced by a licensed professional. Remember to check your air filters monthly and replace them when they are dirty or damaged.

Test your thermostat

Thermostats can become less accurate over time, which could lead to unnecessary cooling. Test it by placing a thermometer near it for 15 minutes. If it’s more than 2-3 degrees off, recalibrate or consider replacing it.

Check your ceiling fan direction

Set your fans to rotate counterclockwise so they create a downdraft to keep you cool. Experts say fans can help you feel up to 4 degrees cooler, but make sure to turn them off when you leave the room. Fans cool people, not spaces.

Seal air leaks

Use caulk to seal air leaks around your home and add weatherstripping around openings near windows and doors.
