PEC Holds Fourth Annual Solar Car Derby

Event Draws More Than 100 Elementary Students for Hands-On Learning

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(MARBLE FALLS, Texas) June 26, 2025 — Today, Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) held its fourth annual Solar Car Derby Day at Putters & Gutters in Marble Falls. The event was put on as part of Camp Save-A-Watt, PEC’s free, virtual summer camp for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. More than 100 campers and their families attended the free event and participated in nine races.

“Events like these are what make PEC a cooperative and more than just a utility,” said Kevyn Packer, PEC Community Outreach Specialist. “It’s always a highlight to provide our members with a day of fun and youth-focused activities.”

Despite some morning cloud-coverage, plenty of sunshine peered through to power the campers’ cars. Kids enjoyed building and racing their solar cars, making arts and crafts, getting their faces painted, eating pizza, playing games, and more. Wattson Raccoon, PEC’s Camp Save-a-Watt mascot also made a special appearance, posing for photos and cheering on the racers throughout the competition.

“Building a solar car can be challenging for young kids, so seeing them work hard through all the steps, watching them problem-solve and put it all together from start to finish is incredible,” Packer said. “They should all be very proud of their hard work.”

Each of the nine teams had one blue-ribbon winner, and all racers received a participation medal.

PEC is committed to caring for its communities and invests in programs like Camp Save-A-Watt to teach and inspire the cooperative’s youngest members. The camp’s weekly lessons teach important topics, including energy conservation and electrical safety. The camp also focuses on the importance of saving energy and money in everyday life — both at home and at school.
