Get Your HVAC Prepped and Ready for Winter

Have a Professional Take a Look So You’re Ready to Weather the Cold

A man changes his thermostat during the winter. In Texas, we know how essential it is to prep our HVAC for the brutal summer heat. But as we’ve seen in recent years, winter weather can be unpredictable, and heating is just as important as cooling when temperatures get extreme.

To ensure your HVAC is ready to weather the winter, consider having it serviced by a professional. To extend the life of the appliance, it’s recommended that you have your unit serviced at least once a year. It’s also a good idea to change your air filters every 30-60 days or any time they’re dirty or clogged.

If your house is poorly insulated, your HVAC may need to work harder to keep you warm. Use weatherstripping to seal air leaks around doors and windows, and caulk around gaps and holes in and outside your home. Keep all supply vents and interior doors open to ensure maximum airflow throughout your house.

Heating and cooling make up 55% of your energy bill. To save some money during cooler times, set your thermostats to 68 degrees. If you have a heat pump, don’t increase the temperature by more than 2 degrees at a time.  Keep the thermostat fan setting on ‘Auto’ and avoid using AUX (auxiliary) or EM (emergency) heat.

With these easy steps, you can help prep your HVAC for the Texas winter and save a little money in the process. To learn more, go to myPEC.com/savings.
